The Kasa Mini Wi-Fi Smart Plug is a good and reliable smart plug with a simple interface. It is easy to set up and gives clear indications when it is on or off. The design allows you to use two plugs in a duplex outlet, however if you have a four-outlet setup the width of these plugs will be a challenge.

Although this is a good device, and would be great for most applications, we don’t recommend it in a short-term rental setting. The plug connects to Wi-Fi which is something we don’t recommend and it makes it difficult to isolate these devices from the rest of your network. If you have a smart hub at your property, these connect using the cloud service so you’ll usually see the plugs in your account – regardless of their location – appear in all your locations’ device lists.

Note: During testing we found that these devices became non-functional if we blocked their access to communicate with China. This should not be a requirement for these devices to function.

If you are looking for a better smart plug for your vacation rental or Airbnb, we recommend trying the Tapo Mini Smart Plug.

Note: Our goal with these device recommendations is to help you get your short-term rental automated quickly, reliably and securely. We want you to use our software, so we have provided these recommendations to help you get started.
