To be honest, there aren’t that many smart smoke alarm options available on the market. There have been some great options over the years but most of them have been discontinued.
Having alerts to smoke and carbon monoxide at your short-term rental property is critical, and for permitting, required. The best device we’ve found is the Google Nest Protect Smoke Alarm, which is a combined smoke/CO alarm. We like how it warns us about a pending alarm before actually going off – which we’ve noticed happens quite a bit when we have guests who decide to cook an entire package of bacon. It’s great that it gives them a warning before triggering an alarm, and has a nice big button to quickly silence it.
Although the Google Nest Protect Smoke Alarm doesn’t integrate really well into other smart platforms (like SmartThings), it is a nice device and still one of the best available. We recommend having at least one of these in your short-term rental property or Airbnb so you know if there are any issues with smoke or carbon monoxide in the house – either from smoking or a potential fire.
